27th Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading Habakkuk 1: 2-3; 2:2-4
The Just One because of his faith shall live.
The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” The Lord replied, “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.’”
With all the violence that has been going on around us, you can understand what Habakkuk says. He didn’t understand why God didn’t stop the violence and destruction. God told Habakkuk to have faith in His plan. Although it may seem like it, God is never late. He is working constantly to make good things come. You just have to have patience, power, love, and self-control. God has the vision of what is coming in your life. You have to trust that He is going to do this in many ways. He will choose people you know to help you, and people that you don’t know to help you. He will give you all the energy and wisdom you need to stay on His path.
If you have never seen a mustard seed, it would be worth your while to buy a container in the spice section of the grocery store. They are as small as the end of a straight pin. God says he will have good ideas and greatness to grow if we have faith the size of the mustard seed. Have a little bit of faith in God and you will grow in his ways with love, strength, and forgiveness for yourself and others.
When you get on a school bus in the morning, you have faith that it will take you to your school. When the firemen and the police come to our aid, you have faith that they will do everything in their power to help you. When you do not understand the lesson that your teacher has taught, you have faith that he/she will be glad to teach it again. You trust that your parents will help you stay on God’s path. They will check up on you and help keep you away from smoking, alcohol, and other drugs. They will show you how to control your tempers. They will help get food for you to eat, and find you shelter from storms. You have to do your part, too. Carry in the groceries. Help set the table. Carry out the trash. Play with your younger brother or sister. Comfort your parents when they are weary.
People are human. We all make mistakes. If you trust a person and they let you down, forgive them. Remember that God is there for you and He never lets you down. God has said, “the just one because of his faith, shall live.” Choose God’s ways. Be one of the just ones. You will live here on earth and with God in Heaven.
Say the “Our Father” and ask God to give you faith the size of a mustard seed. Help your faith in yourself and others grow by loving yourself and others, too.
“Our Father, who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day, our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.”
