Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Luke 10:1-12,17-20 or 1-9 New American Bible

Luke 10:1-12, 17-20 or 1-9 New International Version Bible Gateway

Jesus sent 72 disciples out to the towns where he was planning to visit.  Imagine you are one of these disciples going out in pairs.  Who would God choose for your partner for this trip?  Choose someone now, just for pretending.  You and your partner are to go into the neighboring towns and villages.

Take no money bag with you.  (What’s that you say, NO MONEY?)  No clothing sack. (What, No change of clothes?)

No sandals or shoes. (Just your bare feet. Ouch!  Today that pavement would be hot! The rocky roads would hurt your feet.)

Greet no one on your way…only when you get to a house. (Now, I don’t know why Jesus didn’t want them to greet the people they met on the way, unless he thought that these people might keep them from getting to their destination. Personally, I would like to greet people on the way.  However, I might get so busy talking that I don’t get to the ones, Jesus wanted me to get to that day.)

How is it that you are going to get food and clothing and sandals to cover your feet?  I think I know the answer.  There is a commercial for a credit card, that says don’t leave home without it.  Jesus gave each of his disciples, “The Christian Express Card.”  He still gives them out today.  We shouldn’t leave home without it.

Jesus wants you to prepare the way for him. If the people are good to you, you and your partner will cure their sick and cast out their demons. If the people are not kind to you, then Jesus tells you to knock the dust of that place off of your feet and say, “It will be easier for Sodom to get into heaven when the Kingdom of God is at hand, than it will be for that town that rejected us.”

When Jesus comes to join you, you tell him, “Lord, we are amazed at how quickly the demons leave when we say, ‘Out devil, in the name of Jesus.’ ”

Jesus tells you, “Rejoice and be happy because your names are written in heaven, not because you have power over the evil spirits.”

Then you and your partner look at each other, do a high five, as you look up to the skies and see your names written in the heavens.

God has called you and me by name.  If we keep our eyes on God, we will hear him call us and see our names written in the heavens…just like an airplane sky writer would do.  God is the ultimate writer of all creation.  God is the inventor of all things good and beautiful.  Look in the mirror to see one of the best creations God has ever made.  Draw a picture of yourself.  Write your name on your shirt.  Then draw a picture of the night sky.  Put a lot of stars.  Then connect the stars to form the letters of your name in it.  God has chosen you to prepare the way for him.

Say the “Our Father” and thank God for your many blessings that you have gotten with your “Christian Express Card,” especially the gift of salvation because God’s only begotten Son, Jesus Christ died on the cross so that you could have your name etched in the skies of heaven.

“Our Father, who art in Heaven,

Hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done,

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day, our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

As we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  Amen.”
