Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

My Words Will Last Forever

Mark 13:24-32 New American Bible

 Mark 13:24-32 Bible Gateway NIV

God will send his angels to get us at the end of time.   No one knows when it will be except God the Father.  The sun will not shine.  The moon will not reflect any light.  All of the stars will be falling from the sky.  All the powers in the heavens will be shaken.  God will send his angels to get his elect, his chosen people. All of this sounds pretty scary…it would be like having no electricity ever.  God is all-powerful.  He is the light and the only light you need. If you live your life obeying the ten commandments of Moses and the two great commandments of Jesus Christ, you do not have to worry.  God will come to get us when the lights go out.

Some people are afraid of the dark…because it is unknown to them.  People who are blind are in the dark, but they are still children of God.  Just like when there is no electricity, your parents get everyone together to make sure everyone is okay.  As you learn more about God’s love for you, you are less afraid of the things of this world.

At the end of your life, God will send his angels for you.  He carried Elijah to heaven in a chariot of fire pulled by flaming horses.  Draw a picture of the way you would like for God to take you to heaven.  Would it be a race car?  If so who are your sponsors?  Who are the people who helped you build your faith in God?  Who are the people who encouraged you when you were down?  Who helped you when you were sick or hurt?  Perhaps the people who taught you most about God’s love were your parents, your brothers and sisters, or your grandparents.  It could have been your friends, your parish priest, or your teacher.  When God is ready for us, the angels will escort us to heaven.

Each of us is racing to heaven.  We have to be careful.  The sharp curves of evil try to get us to stop and go a different way.  If you can imagine what it would be like if you went backwards on a racetrack or if you went the wrong way.  Guess what!  God can straighten us out.  He lifts us up and turns us around.  He forgives us when we make a wrong turn.  God sent his only begotten Son, Jesus Christ to die on the cross so that our sins could be forgiven. With God we are all winners! If we ask him, he will pick us up and put us on the right track.

When you get afraid, thank God for being a loving and forgiving God.  When the lights go out of your world, God will be always be there for you.  He sends you everything and everyone you need to survive peacefully on this earth.

Say the “Our Father.” Ask God the Father to help you to share your faith with others.  Ask God to help you be a God-sponsor for others.  Show them how much God loves them by sharing the love God has given you.  Then my friend, when God comes for you.  You will be ready for your ride to heaven.  When God’s angels come for you, you will be ready.  Jesus has promised that this will happen.  He said his words will not pass away.  So you can believe that God will come for you, just as Jesus said.  His words are truth.  You want to be ready for that last lap which will take you to God in the Winner's circle. Amen.

“Our Father, who art in Heaven,

Hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done,

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day, our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

As we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  Amen.
